IPL

What is IPL?

Similar to a photo flash, IPL uses scattered light on several wavelengths to treat skin problems.

First, the light from IPL penetrates the second layer of your skin, called the dermis, without harming your epidermis or top layer. Next, the pigment cells in your skin absorb the light and convert it into heat. Finally, the heat either destroys unwanted pigment to clear up spots or damages hair follicles to prevent regrowth.

Dr. Rothfleisch recommends IPL to minimize or remove:

  • Age and spots
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Birthmarks
  • Rosacea
  • Unwanted hair

What can I expect during a laser treatment?

Before your IPL treatment, the target area is cleaned, and a cooling gel applied. Once you’re in a comfortable, relaxed position, Dr. Rothfleisch asks you to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light.

Next, he uses the IPL handpiece to apply light pulses to your skin. The pulses cause a stinging sensation that tends to feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin.

To achieve optimal results, you must schedule multiple sessions spaced about one month apart. Dr. Rothfleisch provides these details to you when he explains your personalized treatment plan.

What happens after an IPL session?

After your IPL session, expect a few days of redness and sensitivity, similar to a sunburn. Some men and women experience pinpoint bruising, and any brown spots that peel off in a few days.

There’s no downtime after an IPL session, so feel free to return to your regular activities, including wearing makeup. However, it’s best to avoid using hot water until your skin heals. Dr. Rothfleisch also recommends you avoid:

  • Sunlight and tanning beds
  • Waxing, chemical peels, and collagen injections
  • Aspirin and ibuprofen to avoid increased risk of bleeding
  • Products containing vitamin A

For aftercare, use a skin cleanser and moisturizer formulated for sensitive skin for one week before returning to your regular skin care routine and always use sunscreen.

Once you complete all your IPL sessions, it’s best to return for maintenance appointments once or twice a year.
