Leg Veins

What causes visible veins and vein problems?

A venous obstruction or chronic venous insufficiency is usually the cause of visible veins and vein problems.

Chronic Venous Obstruction

A chronic venous obstruction is a blockage in the veins that typically occurs when the scar tissue in the vein damages the valves. This scarring results in a poor return of blood flow to the heart or a backward flow of blood.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

If the valves in your veins are damaged, blood can flow backward and increase the blood pressure in your legs. This condition is called venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency. Pressure in your leg veins can cause additional symptoms over time, including restless leg syndrome, neuropathy, and visible leg veins.

What are the risk factors for developing vein problems?

The risk factors for developing vein problems and visible veins include:

  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Genetics
  • Childbirth
  • Tall height
  • Family history
  • Jobs where you sit or stand for long periods
  • Being female, due to the progesterone hormone

What are the treatments for veins?

After a physical examination, Dr. Rothfleisch may recommend one or more of the following treatments depending on the specifics of your case.

Lifestyle changes

Dr. Rothfleisch recommends elevating your legs, improving your nutrition, exercising regularly, and walking more frequently to help your calf muscles push the venous blood back up to your heart. Other helpful lifestyle changes include not sitting or standing for long periods of time and maintaining a healthy weight to relieve pressure on your leg veins.

Compression stockings

Compression stockings can provide symptom relief, and you can buy them over the counter.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an effective in-office treatment to remove unwanted veins, and most veins fade within a few weeks. This time-trusted procedure can relieve aching and swollen veins as well as veins that have become a cosmetic concern.

During your sclerotherapy treatment, Dr. Rothfleisch injects a sclerosing agent into the vein that causes scarring and forces blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is later reabsorbed into your local tissue and eliminated.

In some cases, multiple sclerotherapy treatments are necessary.

Other effective methods of vein removal and treatment include ablation, Dye VL laser technology, and microphlebectomy. Start with a consultation and book your appointment online or call the office today.
